Here’s the first plugin for WordPress (works with 1.2.2) that applies a filter to your comments and will insert the rel=”nofollow” attribute into any link a commenter leaves on your website.
I prefer to stick with the protection I’ve put into place to block comment and trackback spam instead of blocking SE’s from spidering the links of those that comment on my blogs. Not only does the rel=”nofollow” attribute keep spammers from benefiting from their links but also legitimate participants do not get credit for their inbound links.

1Now if someone came up with a plugin that inserted the rel=”nofollow” and allowed one to approve comments to remove it, that’d be cool.

2The plugin seems to be in conflict with Spam Stopgap Extreme. This is in WP 1.3 alpha.

3“participants do not get credit for their inbound links”
Since when did commenting on a blog entitle you to any ‘credit’? This isn’t a popularity contest. You make it sound like people and spammers both comment on blogs simply for search engine rank and you want to be selective as to ‘who’ you allow that privilege.
If people are commenting on my blog they do so at their own free will. There is nothing to imply that I owe them anything.
Yes it is unfortunate that the nofollow parameter will affect everyone and not just the spammers, but that is hardly a reason to condemn the practice.

4Since when does commenting on how I plan on or not plan on implementing a particular practice constitute condemning the practice?
I have no need to use the nofollow attribute in my links as I haven’t had any comment spam in months and if I did it would be removed immediately. I also prefer to allow those that participate in Blogging Pro and my other weblogs to receive PageRank credit, however little that may be.
