FTP Programs

A little while back Chris Tingom of Brainfuel asked what FTP programs everyone used, since he could not find one with an interface that suited him.

In the end he made a list of the software mentioned to him via comments on the post, and surprisingly to me, there was only one Linux tool mentioned.

Here are a few items from the list:

Windows

  • Igloo FTP
  • CuteFTP

Mac

  • Fetch
  • Transmit

*Nix

  • gFTP

Feel free to list your favorites in the comments, and if you use Linux, or even just know of a good FTP application for Linux, please let me know. Also, check out the original list for links to the applications.

In my opinion, Filezilla is the best (windows).

The reason for omitting Linux tools is simple – practically any file manager in Linux can do FTP. Konqueror in KDE. Nautilus in Gnome (IIRC). Midnight Commander (mc) in console.

If you don’t like those, there is a nice one for command line – lftp.

i use linux and, yes, i use gftp :)
gftp has all u need from a gui for the ftp protocol (but it supports also ssh and some other protocols!).
more skilled users can work with command line tools such as ncftp or lftp.

Don’t forget Cyberduck! It’s one of the best ftp client for mac. And it’s free.

On linux I use mc’s built in, or gftp

You can also use FireFTP. An FTP client that is just a Firefox extension (hence available for both Linux and Windows). I’d rather use lftp though.

I’m surprised there wasn’t a WS_FTP Pro user or a FlashFXP user around to bash people over the head. Both are quality apps for Windows.

WS_FTP Pro has become a bit bloated lately, but is still a quality product, and FlashFXP lets you transfer files directly between two FTP servers, rather than downloading and uploading again (assuming they don’t block such behavior) – which is a unique feature in the Windows FTP app world.

    -/usr/bin/scp :-p

    -cyberduck

I knew there was one besides Transmit on OS X that I liked, but I couldn’t for the life of me remember the name. Cyberduck was it (I remember the rubber ducky icon…). It’s a quality app as well.

For windows, you can also use CoreFTP, the “Lite” version is free, supports multiple instances (I admin 11 sites, this is insanely useful sometimes), stores individual site profiles, and its free. I stumbled on it one day, and haven’t gone back since.
