Some people knew I was going to have to touch this subject sooner or later. I was hoping to ignore it and it would go away, but there has just been too much press around Chartreuse2.
For the longest time you could go to Chartreuse on WordPress.com. There were some interesting posts that were mostly converation starters, rather than what I would consider to be anything substantial, but it worked, and the site did very well. So well, infact, that the site has now been moved off of WordPress.com and a new site, Chartreuse2 has been born where you have to pay to be a reader.
I have heard of subscription models, but most of them are enforced by donations, or giving subscribers something extra. I don’t think I have seen a fully subscription readership only blog before. And at nearly $10 a month, I don’t think many could survive like this.
Chartreuse2 is going to be much like the old Chartreuse, but more over the top, or something…
I have tons of mixed feelings about this. I find the price point too high, especially for an entertainment blog. But I guess I just don’t “get” Chartreuse.
Could some blogs survive on a subscription only model? Sure, but I think this one is doomed to fail. He might make some decent cash the first two months, but after that…I think people will get bored and the well will dry up.
You have to provide something worth the membership fees being paid in. I think if he had gone for the $5 price point, he might have had some yearly subscribers paying in, but that’s just my two cents on the issue.
Would you pay to read a blog? What if your favourite blog went to a pay to read model? And if you’d pay, how much do you think is a perfect amount, remembering that Paypal takes their fee too.
