The last thing that the world (assuming we speak of the same one) needs is a new blogging tool. There are already zillions of sites which only exist in order to inform the (planetarily speaking) marginal number of people who can afford the time and effort of blogging of how they can boost their rankings in order to attract new visitors, hopefully bloggers themselves. I do not condescend because I am part of this. No, really, does the world need new blogging tools or does it rather need social justice and the possibility for everyone to speak freely? The blogosphere seems to be more of a singularity than a sphere, in the sense that it is very, very small. When speaking of the world, that is. Let those who publish with Wordpress publish with Wordpress, and those who prefer MovableType publish with MovableType. Those who can't publish anything don't care, anyway. Or did I take the term "world" too seriously?

Can there ever be a blogging platform that will satisfy everyone? I'd agree with Joshua that Wordpress is probably the best as it allows the average guy to add more functions (relatively) easily.

And even with that, I'm having a mojor headach at my forum trying to meet everyone's demands on what they want their WP blog to be.

<blockquote>WordPress depends too heavily on plugins to achieve basic functionality</blockquote>

And one day, someone will say, "This new blogging tool has more features than I would ever use."

My point is, currently, that "new blogging tool" is not existant, but WP is here.

When WP + plugins can't meet your need, that's when you need a new blogging tool.

WP is a solid base, you just need to expand/customize it rather than creating something from a scratch.

I think WordPress depends too heavily on plugins to achieve basic functionality. I don't want my blogging software to feel to like an OS with gazillions of applications runnings.

Nope, we don't need a new one. We just need to fill the missing features in WP with plugins.

I agree with him. I've been thinking about moving away from WordPress, but I don't really have anything to migrate to... other than something I put together myself (which I'm not entirely against). I can't customize WordPress to be exactly like I want it to be and rolling my own seems like the only way to get all the features I want in one package.

I have setup many WordPress and ExpressionEngine blogs. While I prefer ExpressionEngine overall, it can't (easily) do custom (or even <em>logical</em>) URIs and its developers seem more interested in making un-integrated modules than improving the core CMS functionality.

ExpressionEngine's administration and versatility are far superior to WordPress, but there <em>needs</em> to be something that meets in the middle between the two.

Hi David.

Although I agree that Wordpress is the way to go, I'm not certain if I would want to see several different versions floating out there. It could muddy up the waters a little and cause compatibility problems with plugins, themes etc. In other words it might have the exact opposite effect.

In my humble opinion what Wordpress.com really needs to do is offer a free hosting solution that will allow full access to editing the html and ftp access to directory folders. If they do that they will blow the doors off the competition.

There will be such a stampede from Blogger et al that the after shocks from the thunderous din will reverberate till kingdom come.

Since I prompted Kedorsky's post, I want to emphasize that we're absolutely ready for a new standalone blogging platform, so long as it leaves behind the tools of the past. Face it, the differences between WordPress and any of the other umpteen PHP/MySQL tools is sown to personal preferernce. It's time for someone to take a freah look at the problem.

WordPress is good, but that's no excuse of slavish devotion.
