I can't believe this was published so long ago but Matt's take on the future of this platform seems eerily accurate on most counts. (Especially considering the pace at which things move on the internet) Magic mirror on the wall perhaps?

[...] On the one hand, open source model of software development that relies on trust in the community, is gaining prominence. Google is a media and community darling based on its “don’t be evil” mantra. Wikipedia is becoming one of the most important and useful source of information on the web.
I like the options in the WordPress.org version, and would probably regret if most of them were done away with. I probably wouldn't mind though if some were moved out to optional plug-ins, as long as they were still maintained.

I beg to disagree. Though I respect Matt for the hours he has poured into WP, I did create a "KnockOff-Press" (which I humbly think does add value to my growing customer list)... and he had nothing but harsh words about it. I'm not going to quote them because I don't want this to turn into a shit-slinging fest, but I do have those harsh comments saved up for any occasion.

How about interviewing one of us who've made KnockOff-Presses? Try me or Denis de Bernardy. Maybe we can offer a balanced point of view.

I would love for WordPress.org to have fewer options and a more streamlined administration, and a richer way to interact and update plugins and themes.
