Migrating blog from one platform to another is a painful experience. You loose all your back links and your visitors too. And again you have to build those precious back links.

Oh... I hate moving blogs. I'm at "move + six months." I had quite a following for what I was posting on my old site, then my time, energy and creativity took a sabbatical for almost 6 months at the expense of my regular readers. I decided to move some of the content over but not all. (what I did move was random) on the root of the domain I put a server permanent redirect I left the old (and abandoned) content up with a note for a while, then just a note. after six months I'm still amazed at the oddball requests in the server logs.

Good luck with the launch

A friend of mine moved from http://andyc.wordpress.com to http://www.nbrightside.com/blog/

If you look to some of the old entries around the time of the move you can see his thoughts about what went wrong. http://www.nbrightside.com/blog/category/blogging/page/2/

namely:
- issues with the new host
- deleting the old blog (much better to leave it there and put a "I've moved over here message")

That's quite an undertaking there, David! It's always a bother when you have to refocus something to where you are now, and not where you were when you started it. Blogs, products, whatever - it all comes down to how good your guesses where back then on how it all would evolve, and also how well you've executed your plans. Since we're all lacking a functional crystal ball sometimes it comes down to reinventing the product in question. I take it you went with that option.

Finding a good domain name is a bother, but I think you should be happy with DavidCubed.com. I got mine (tdhedengren.com) quite some time ago, but I think it still would've been available if I didn't. ;) I had some trouble coming up with (recently launched) Bloggertalks.com, but luckily I did. Domain names are hard.
