For those that use the Adsense Beautifier plugin for their WordPress blogs, they might find themselves a little disappointed, as Google has changed the rules when it comes to images next to their advertisements.
The two most important points are:
Can I place small images next to my Google ads?
We ask that publishers not line up images and ads in a way that suggests a relationship between the images and the ads. If your visitors believe that the images and the ads are directly associated, or that the advertiser is offering the exact item found in the neighboring image, they may click the ad expecting to find something that isn’t actually being offered. That’s not a good experience for users or advertisers.
Publishers should also be careful to avoid similar implementations that people could find misleading. For instance, if your site contains a directory of Flash games, you should not format the ads to mimic the game descriptions.
What if I place a space or a line between my images and my ads? Would that work? No. If the ads and the images appear to be associated, inserting a small space or a line between the images and ads will not make the implementation compliant.
Interesting problem for advertisers and something that many are going to have to change. And to think I was thinking of trying to use images to increase click through rates on my sites…

1Hey David -
Very helpful post, and to think that just like you I was recently thinking of trying it myself to increase the CTR. Guess that idea goes to the scrap pile!
Have a great one!

4Hello David,
There is a fine line here…
“We ask that publishers not line up images and ads in a way that suggests a relationship between the images and the ads.”
and here
“Publishers should also be careful to avoid similar implementations that people could find misleading.”
From the examples Google shows, and the other live ones we all know….
It is the fact that some people show images that relate to the ads that causes the problems!!
If you have a site about mobile phones and you show little phones in line with the adsense advertising, then you are in trouble.
If you show some art icons, or icons not releated to the subject, I personaly think (form interpreting the text) you should be fine.
I have my small images up again…

5This is really a bummer to alot of AdSense publishers. I just wonder if it would be considered a violation if they did not directly line up. I have seen many sited that have the ads inbetween the pictures.
Well at least there are still AdSense Background Images.
WinExtra » Google pimps itself and you’re surprised?

6[...] One of the tricks they have learned is to screw your customers but in such a way that won’t upset them too much and you can still take their money - in other words pimp the hell out of yourself at every turn. They do this by placing their various services as tips at the top of the search results page - even above the the sponsored AdSense links. This might have been a borderline questionable practice but then they step over the line by giving themselves an advantage of including a graphic - which occurs nowhere else. In fact Google frowns on any attempt to beautify search results to the point your AdSense account can be suspended. [...]
