Ahmed contacted me and pointed out a quick article on SEO Black Hat which shows some examples of link requests that work.
Hey man, looked at your wordpress code/html noticed the structure isn’t completely optimized, would you be interested in having it optimized in exchange for a link back to my site? maybe a post?
for instance, there’s random header tags in the menu which you probably don’t want.

They don’t follow the advice that he gave earlier, but they still work, and I think that people really need to work on their link request e-mails as many of the ones I have received were absolutely horrible, and a bit spammy.
