I really hope that bbPress will be turned into a canonical plugin for WordPress. bbPress borrows a lot of the the source code from WordPress anyway so it makes perfect sense to have a bbPress plugin which should not be too hard to do. It could also stay as a standalone forum software for people who do not use WordPress.

I think having bbPress as a plugin would be awesome - and like what you say, if you just want to have forums, just not use any part of wordpress. bbPress really has a lot of potential - only thing it still doesn't have that mass of plugin devlopers to beef up the functionality.

Although Matt has already announced that it will still be possible to go for the standalone option, I don't see the issue with it being a 'plugin without standalone option'.

If installed as a plugin for a standalone forum, just change the home page and never use anything of WP (except maybe pages for a disclaimer and about page.

I'm on the fence on this one. I can see the benefits of it becoming a plugin, but also the advantages of it being standalone.

Either way, it needs some serious attention, because it has the potential to do so, so well.

phpBB3 and vBulletin are so dated in comparison to what bbPress could be, if it turned out to be anything like WordPress.

If I understood things well Matt had invited some people and the final announcement was only 30 minutes before the chat took place. The complete transcript of the chat can be read on the bbPress blog and the answer whether bbPress will become a plugin or not can be found in this comment from Matt.
