It could also stay as a standalone forum software for people who do not use WordPress. I can see the benefits of it becoming a plugin, but also the advantages of it being standalone. Either way, it needs some serious attention, because it has the potential to do so, so well. phpBB3 and vBulletin are so dated in comparison to what bbPress could be, if it turned out to be anything like WordPress.
