Actually, "buttonitis" was coined in the early 1960's, for Jane Jetson was afflicted with it during one of the show's episodes. The disease was akin to carpal tunnel syndrome since Jane's hands were killing her from pushing all those futuristic gadgets around her space-age home. Urban Dictionary is hardly the authority on nomenclature.

Dave, if well implemented I don't mind one line of buttons. I am no fan of 'Add to any' because it is too much. Firstly too often have I hovered over it and secondly not every content works well on every network.

Take the Mashable homepage and compare the Twitter vs. Facebook shares. 400+ vs. 11? I would feel as if I were making laughing stock myself. Delete that not performing FB button from the home page. Here on BP it would make no sense to have links to submit to Newsvine, Yahoo! Buzz, Mixx and only few of our entries could do well on Digg, Reddit and Delicious. And regulars of these networks have usually a toolbar installed.

Buttonitis, I like it! I think Digg is a great example because it's supposed to be all about the content, but the buttons are slowly taking over the whole page.
I like the Wordpress "Add to Any" plugin because it hides TONS of social networking buttons under one small button (they pop up when you mouse over the icon).
Of course it's tempting because as a publisher you would really like someone to subscribe to your RSS feed, or check out your advertiser, or explore your tags but if you think of it from the user's perspective, they just want to read your content!

Thanks for a great post! I am patting myself on the back to learn that, as a new blogger, my common sense has served me well, as I try to resist the urge to use every good button I see or hear about.

"below the header the entire fold in 1024*768 screen resolution is filled with non-content."
Lets submit for consideration a new word for the urban dictionary: "nontent"!
