    taking number one into consideration, if a small business is already in the “plumbing” or “landscape” business, then would not their blog be focus on what their business already is?
    there would be no choice as to market selection would there?

    Yes, a business specializing in plumbing or landscaping would already have a chosen field. But incorrect market selection would be if the business decided to target a specific area within these areas without fully researching the level of interest and profitability.
    For instance, plumbing has many different niches. Some companies work on residential properties only, some are contracted to work on larger commercial projects. There are those that specialize in water piping and others that deal with only gas installation. Within gas installation itself, there is sub-specialization and some plumbing contractors will only install, repair, and maintain certain products or brands.
    It is this type of targeted marketing that requires intensive market research. It is not always possible to compete with larger established companies that offer a very wide range of services at lower rates. The best way into a market for many small businesses is to focus on very specific areas of expertise, where there is less competition and a better chance of generating leads by focusing on targeted search phrases.
    Without correct market research, a small business may target a very specialized area that does not have the level of interest to sustain a profitable business enterprise. This is the type of erroneous market selection that is being highlighted here.
    Specialization into niche areas of any particular market can prove very beneficial to small business, but they must be very wary of taking that one step too far. Low competition is excellent but a business needs to ensure this is because they have found an untapped niche and not because this specific market is unprofitable or barren.

    Roko your points are valid about low or no competition but how would you know that it’s untapped or bust unless you jump into the market. You could do a ton of research and if your niche is untapped there wouldn’t be a lot of information out there about it.
