How To Build A Twitter Following By Being Yourself

Building a Twitter following doesn’t have to be a complicated process. When you build a following by being yourself, you’ll find you have a much more quality audience for your tweets. The people who choose to follow you will be more likely to be interested in your tweets, and to retweet and interact with you. Although it may take time to gain a substantial audience at first, the higher quality of your followers will make it more than worth the effort and time.

Maximize Your Profile

How exactly do you build a following by being yourself? Start with your profile. Use a good picture, of yourself if possible. Make your bio a brief but clear message about who you are and what you really care about. People will check out your profile before they follow you, most of the time, so you really want it to show who you are and what you’re likely to be tweeting.

Not only will potential followers check out your profile, but they will probably read through the last few tweets you made. All of your tweets should be reflective of your personality. Tweets may be short, but it’s still easy to fit your voice and personality into those 140 characters. And avoid tweeting the same message over and over again- that’s a sure way to lose followers or get ignored. If the message is that important to you, limit repetition and rephrase it.

Who to Follow?

Choosing who to follow can be important too. Don’t follow just anyone, follow those who actually interest you. Then get involved in the conversation! Retweet, respond, and engage with those you follow. If they notice you have something to add to the conversation, they’re more likely to follow you back. Never follow someone just to get a follow back, however. These type of followers are likely to wind up ignoring you, regardless of what you send out into the Twitterverse. Make sure that you aren’t retweeting anything that doesn’t align with what you believe in and stand for, unless you are adding your own comments to show where you stand.

Being yourself will make your tweets more meaningful, and your followers will appreciate you more for it. They’ll look forward to seeing what you have to share, and be far more likely to retweet, bringing new eyes to your feed. If you are passionate about what you are tweeting about, it’ll shine through, and you’ll attract followers who are really interested in reading what you have to say. You can hack Twitter followers to get more numbers but they won’t have the engagement that comes from being yourself.

The expanded sharing function in iOS 8 is something I use heavily in my work. When I run across something of interest using the apps above, I share it with a few taps to Evernote.
