You might be thinking that what is the need of knowing such a basic thing and you have worked hard to find out how to get a high rank for your website. You are all pumped up to apply all that you have learned over the internet to your website. But let me warn you that SEO may seem relatively simple but it is a minefield and sometimes even the professionals tend to get off the track with slightest of mistakes. In this article we are going to discuss some common web SEO mistakes that most of the webmasters commit and it will help you to avoid this type of mistakes.

1. Targeting wrong keywords

This is most common web SEO mistakes that most of the beginners make and even experts are not untouched by this factor. In general webmasters aim for keywords which they think best define their website and they forget that the people looking out for such information are not likely to use the keywords aimed according to an advertising brochure. There are times when the actual keyword research can surprise you and you will come to know how off target you were.

2. Use of Graphics and Flash in excess

There is no doubt that flash content looks great on web page and for the time being there is nothing better than that little animation describing your various services. But you would be amazed to know that web crawlers can only understand text and these animations means very little to them. The better approach is to use a hybrid approach using both flash headers and HTML content simultaneously.

3. Avoiding the importance of Title tag

In general people use title tag for the name of their company which is no way beneficial to the web SEO. It is important to include the relevant keywords in the title tag of your website. Moreover you can use different title tags depending upon the information provided in that particular web page.

4. Non relevant Link Building

All the major search engines consider external links as a plus point to your website and it often helps in establishing the authority of your website. But it is very important to understand that irrelevant links are of no use to your website and your main focus should be on websites relevant to your basic concept or idea.

5. Use of JavaScript Menus

JavaScript menus look great on your website and it is always good to see that magical effect on hover but you may not know that search engines do not read JavaScript. So in case you are using JavaScript menus then make sure that all the HTML links are present on one or other page of the website. The best way is to provide an HTML or XML sitemap of your website so that the search engine crawler can list all the links of your website.

6. Use of Non-Ethical or Black Hat Techniques

During the earlier days of SEO these black hat methods showed great results for comparatively lesser efforts. Some of the major black hat techniques include doorway pages, hidden text, overstuffing keywords etc. and these were very much in use. But nowadays these techniques are responsible for getting you penalties and banned so it is better to avoid any such technique in web SEO.

7. Inconsistency and Maintenance Efforts

Most of the people are of the opinion that once they have achieved high search engine rank, there is no more need to put in any web SEO efforts. But in reality, a better search engine rank can only be guaranteed with a consistent effort to optimize your website, careful examination of competition and updating your website according to the changing search engine algorithms.

8. Services from Unethical SEO Consultants

The internet is full of SEO consultants offering quick time rankings in search engines or some of them even claim some relationship with these Search engines. Be aware of such consultants as these SEO consultants will indulge your website into unfair link building strategies and will result in getting your website banned. In some cases there are even SEO consultants who ran away with the client’s money, so only trust reputable consultants for any such services.

9. Use of Images as Headings

Many webmasters use images as the headings because of the fact that images look better than text and they even use images for menus and all the major headings. No doubt that these images make your website look better but with respect to web SEO, these image a real blunder. Heading tags including H1, H2, H3 & H4 are very important with respect to SEO and one should include all major keywords in these headings. The headings are considered as important and search engines make an estimation of the content with these headings only. So use these heading consistently and to every possible advantage.

10. Avoid In-house Optimization

Most of the people consider SEO to be an important task and try to do it all by themselves. In past few years search engines have made huge changes to their algorithms for providing more accurate results. With such changes even the experts have to work very hard to achieve good rankings then how come you are expecting your site to rank good. So it is better to look out for a reputed SEO firm and get a decent web SEO package for your website.

Web SEO is a process requiring great level of expertise and needs you to put in lot of efforts. The increased competition in the Internet industry has made it even much harder to get a better rank in search results. Web SEO is no more that easy link building only process which can be done by submitting your website to some directories. A good web SEO strategy should include both on-page and of-page SEO supplemented with high quality content and should be followed by consistent hard work.

Many blog services already support mobile blogging (aka moblogging) via email, phone, and text messages (aka SMS and MMS) which can make blogging on the go easier without the need of a WiFi network or a computer.

So instead of being jealous of your iPhone friends, Blackberry buddies or your neighbor sporting the latest Android device, here is a “brief” guide on how you can blog from your mobile phone without adding to your monthly phone bill from buying a smart phone.

Posting via Email

If your basic phone supports a data plan, you can actually email posts to your blog (which requires you to create a secret “email to blog” address) without having to use text messages.

Most blog services support posting via email including Blogger, LiveJournal, Squarespace, Typepad, MovableType (through a plugin), Tumblr and of course WordPress (self hosted blogs too).

With the exception of Blogger and MovableType, most of these blog platforms support both image and text posting, with Tumblr going a step further by supporting audio attachments (which becomes quite useful if you want to publish any voice messages to the world).

Typepad, WordPress.com and Tumblr also give users the extra option of adding categories/tags to your posts, which can help disguise the fact that you were writing an article from your phone instead of your computer.

Podcasting via mobile phone

Some bloggers prefer to have their voice heard instead of read via text. Currently only LiveJournal and Tumblr (via the Goodies page) allow users to “call in” a post, which will basically post an audio message upon your blog site.

For those of you seeking third party services to help post your voice upon Blogger, WordPress, etc., I would recommend Gabcast which allows you to call in an audio post for about $0.10/minute from your phone.

Posting via SMS

Due to the limited number of characters one can type (160 which is just above Twitter’s 140 limit), bloggers may not want to use this method, unless you are on Blogger (who supports image posting via SMS and MMS but ironically not through emails).

Although many blog platforms do provide limited support for text messaging, it may be wise for bloggers to simply add their secret “email to blog” address as a contact and simply text to their blog from there.

What about Posterous? And why not just buy a smart phone?

Even though Posterous can upload text and media via email, many bloggers may prefer to keep their content on blog platforms that offer more functionality (especially when it comes to themes and advertising).

Although I would suggest bloggers invest in a smart phone of some type (as long as it isn’t Windows Mobile 6.x), some people may not enjoy paying more money to a wireless company or spending over $100 (if not more) on a brand new smart phone.

Get backlinks to your Blog!

If you are looking to promote your blog and get high quality backlinks from a PR6 2003 domain then Blogsearchengine.com is for you. For as little as $14.99 you can submit your blog and have a review written and published there with a backlink to your website or blog, we accept all niche!

It doesn’t matter what the aim of your is blog, whether you set out to become the next person getting rich in only 4 hours per week, want to run the hottest dating column in town, aim to take Arrington’s crown or just want to blog for fun, if you chose for WordPress there are some basics your blog needs.

You need a theme with solid, semantic code, and you will need some plugins to boost your setup. But before we proceed I have to disclaim that there are things I will not use a plugin for, or rely on WP for. Such as backup, I prefer having a cron based automated backup procedure

A Solid Theme

Before you start adding plugins to your setup, you should first consider a solid theme for your site. Of course you can always change your theme afterwards but often this will result in issues with sizes of embedded images, videos and so on. So better prepare yourself and start with a theme and stick with it for a while.

In the last 2 years the WordPress theme market has literally exploded and never have there been that many great themes to chose from. It doesn’t matter whether you prefer to go with a paid theme or with a free theme, as long as your preferred theme is based upon semantical code, you will benefit a great SEO boost. I have had great success with multiple themes in the past and used k2, the first Mimbo theme, Cutline, Thematic, Notesblog just to name a few of the free themes I have worked with in the past and recommend to anyone.

Time to add the most essential plugins to your WordPress installation now.

Akismet

Akismet is probably the single most important plugin needed for WP bloggers. Akismet still is bundled together with every WordPress download and requires to you have a WordPress.com account in order to retrieve a API key to use the Akismet functionality, which is based on a closed software algorithm.

Personally I have almost always been happy with Akismet as only option although on some, highly linked blogs within the Splashpress Media network, we also use WP-Spamfree as additional measure. Sergej Müller’s WP Antispam Bee is another alternative to additionally use together with Akismet.

Google XML Sitemap

The next plugin I will always install is Arne Brachold’s Google XML Sitemap plugin. The plugin does exactly what it says on the tin and adds a Google compliant XML sitemap to your blog.

Arne Brachold’s plugin comes with several configurations options, and although the default settings will be good for the majority of the users, this is one of those times when it’s actually interesting to RTM.
On slower servers, with huge blogs, it is a consideration to limit the number of entries/pages listed in your sitemap as rebuilding the sitemap with every new post can slow down posting considerably.

You can now additionally add your sitemap to Google’s Webmaster Tools as any SEO will advice you, but if you are mainly blogging for fun, Google will check your blog after every notification anyway from now on.

Align RSS Images

Aligned images in feeds are a pet peeve of mine and although there are ways to bypass the standard alignment of most feed readers, I like my images aligned the easy way.

Align RSS Images is one of many plugins offering this functionality and probably the easiest to use: upload/install the plugin, activate it and enjoy looking at your own entries with properly aligned images in your feed from now on.

AntiVirus for WordPress

AntiVirus for WordPress is another plugin from Sergej Müller, who’s Antispam Bee plugin we already mentioned above. AntiVirus checks your theme files for malicious code and encrypted code. Most of the time I will only use themes from ‘safe’ sources but because no software will ever be 100% safe, nor should the risk that your server/hosting might be hacked at some point be ignored, I highly recommend to install AntiVirus for WordPress, or one of the other plugins with similar function. Now if your theme files are hacked, you’ll at least be notified of the problem if you run the daily (automated) scan.

Contact Form 7

Contact Form 7 is my preferred contact form for WordPress blogs, especially because it’s easy to tie in with Akismet spam filtering and thus keeps my inbox rather tidy.

Copy the following code to add Akismet filtering to the email sender’s name, email address and URL. The code the same setup used for our BloggingPro contact page.

<p>Your Name (required)<br />
    1 </p>

<p>Your Email (required)<br />
    [email* your-email akismet:author_email] </p>

<p>Your Website<br />
   1</p>

<p>Subject<br />
    1 </p>

<p>Your Message<br />
    [textarea your-message] </p>

<p>[submit \"Send\"]</p>

Subscribe to comments

Mark Jaquith’s Subscribe to Comments plugin is one of those no-brainers. The only reason why you would consider not implementing ‘Subscribe to Comments’ would be because you think it’s ethically not correct, borders on spamming or maybe because your blog receives hundreds of comments with every entry.

PostRank

I am a long-term fan of PostRank and first reviewed their product in May 2008 when still called aideRSS. Today the PostRank plugin has become a standard plugin in my WordPress setup as it provides me with quick details about the popularity of entries on social platforms.

Although I would love to see integration of the number of shares on Facebook and if possible even traffic coming via sites such as Stumbleupon, PostRank for WordPress provides me with valuable data and helps me to quickly analyse and understand what blog entries are popular and which content to focus more on.

If you are serious about blogging and want to learn from your own entries, PostRank is a must have plugin.

WP Super Cache

Another no-brainer plugin for every blog is Donncha O Caoimh’s WP Super Cache. WP Super Cache will store cached files of your pages and take the load of your server in case of traffic spikes. In certain hosting environments WP Super Cache might not work 100%, if this is your case consider W3 Total Cache as an alternative.

WP.com stats

There are many statistic packages available on the market but for a majority of WordPress users WordPress.com stats is the main statistics plugin they’ll need, unless at some point you plan to sell your own advertising and need to provide numbers about uniques visitors because WP.com stats only tracks page views, not uniques.

If not, WordPress.com allows you to analyse the traffic to every post, look at the history of posts, tracks both incoming and outgoing links and so much more. On co-authored blogs this stats package is great for authors to see how their posts do and even compare against the traffic generated by other authors, provided you are happy with pageviews and don’t need to track uniques.
Just like with Akismet, you require a WordPress.com account and API key for WordPress.com stats.

WP Twitip-ID

If it ain’t in my twitter stream, it don’t exist

If you’re a blogger, chances that you also have a Twitter account are rather large. Of course you love to promote yourself all over the place and discovered that you can share your wisdom, and links to your entries, easily via Twitter. The microblogging platform is also perfect to connect with your audience, and some will even go as far as saying ‘If it ain’t in my twitter stream, it don’t exist’. That would be me or him.

With Fiddy P’s WP Twitip-ID plugin it is easy to add the option to commenters to leave a link to their Twitter profile, like we did here at BloggingPro.
Note that you will have to add a small bit of code to the template of your comments.

Addendum: Twitip-ID is no longer maintained and has now been replaced by Twitterlink Comments as James correctly mentions in the comments. Personally I still use Twitip-ID on my sites though as it IMHO is cleaner and easier to implement/customise.

Bonus Plugins

FeedBurner Feedsmith

If you use FeedBurner to serve your blog’s feed, the Feedburner Feedsmith plugin is probably the easiest way to redirect your subscribers to the Feedburner plugin.

The Excerpt Reloaded

Sometimes when tweaking or customising a theme, I want more options to configure the display options of the excerpt on the main page or in archive pages. Although with the advent of the post thumbnail since WP 2.9, the often annoying task of uploading different formats of thumbnails has been made easier, I often still want/need more customisation freedom. And what else would I use for that than good ol’ excerpt reloaded?

WP Footnotes

If like me, at times you think you’re funny, or just want to expand on something, with a footnote, it would not be hard to do this manually with some HTML knowledge but things can be done easier. The WP Footnotes plugin takes the HTML out of your footnotes and all you have to do is1. WP Footnotes also has several styling options.

Future Dashboard Widget

Here on BloggingPro we use a slightly tweaked version of Janmi’s Future Dashboard Widget. This widget displays all scheduled, upcoming posts within the WordPress dashboard. We have tweaked our widget to allow every author to see when upcoming posts are scheduled and not restrict this to admins only.

WP Table Reloaded

Some users are hardcore or like living on the edge and what better way to do so than play in a live environment with the database of your blog. If that’s what you love, WP Table Reloaded is your best friend and our guide for automated database and files backup your second best friend.

No Twitter Tools or All In One SEO Pack?

I have left both plugins, and their alternatives, out of this post because I think that a strong theme with great semantics goes a far way when it comes to SEO. Actually, although installed on several blogs, I can not remember when the last was one of our authors used the All in One SEO Pack and nevertheless our sites still rank very well. Same applies to smaller niches sites I have built with WordPress.

There also are several ways to synchronise with, push your entries to Twitter and a plugin is not needed to do so. Sorry but no love for any ‘Twitter Post’ plugin in this entry.

Accepting guest posts on your blog is a great way to give your site fresh insight and to offer some variety. Most of popular blogs in any niche take advantage of guest contributions for a few reasons:

Guest authors bring in new ideas and unique style. They also contribute some new information you were not aware of (and thus make your blog comprehensive). Here’s a simple example: as a search expert I am aware of quite a few search tricks few people know or use. Therefore my post on using Google creatively to save money on a popular personal finance blog seemed so fresh and interesting to the blog author and the readers.

Guest contributions allow you to take a day off. No, seriously, blogging is a continuous commitment. It is so refreshing to take some rest and relax while keeping your blog updated. I do agree you shouldn’t overuse that because your blog might lose voice but keeping one day a week for guest contributions is a great idea!

Guest contributions can be an awesome source of inspiration. You blog daily and a day comes when you realize you don’t know what to write about. You have no ideas and everything that comes to mind have already been covered. Now imagine that a new person enters your community and offers something completely different. Or maybe he even writes something that you have already mentioned – but he uses a unique style, a different perspective and a new format. And your readers find that awesome! Now you feel inspired! You feel you know how to re-use your previously published ideas to find new ones and how to re-think your previously published opinions to spur new discussion.

So I guess, the benefits of accepting guest posts are quite clear. Now, let see how to do that painlessly, almost effortlessly and to the maximum efficiency.

1. Clearly Invite Guest Posters

People reading your blog will most likely want to guest post one day. Or at least they will know that you accept guest posts and will then invite their friends who happen to look for guest posting opportunities. Therefore making it clear that you are looking for guest contributions is such a good idea.

The best way to encourage guest articles is to do the following:

Post an announcement at your blog inviting guest contributors.

Create a static page explaining how to submit a guest post and link to the page from your blog main navigation menus.

A good way to name the page is one of the following:

"Submit a guest post" (if you are looking for one-time contributors);

"Write for us" / "Become an author" (if you are more interested in regular contributors).

This will both tell your readers that you accept guest posts and also will help those using Google to find guest posting opportunities to come across your blog.

2. Clearly State Your Guest Post Requirements

Guest posting is not a new concept but the process as well as rules are still undefined and can vary from blog to blog. Besides, you don’t want to spend plenty of time editing the submissions, so you need clear guidelines to keep the low-quality guest posts to minimum.

I don’t like long lists of rules because people tend to never read them all, so be sure to only list what is really important.

Consider the following guidelines to be included for example:

Required topics (This especially makes sense if you only want contributors to write on some specific topic that you want to  cover on your blog but don’t have expertise in);

Minimum post length (This one may seem superfluous because it somehow limits the author’s creativity: people can actually be brief and provide great content at the same time. But per my experience, this one is required to cut down on short incomplete posts written for the sole purpose to get a link back).

Post formatting requirements (Would you like the post submitted in HTML? Do you use H2 tags?)

Requirements to post images (Would you like the author to submit a related image? Would you like the image to be properly licensed and attributed (I bet you would!))

Re-publishing terms (I for one always require that the post remains never republished for the lifetime of my blog for the fear of duplicate content issue and to maintain my resource uniqueness and quality).

By-line requirements: How many links are allowed from the author’s bio?

It is also advisable to let the guest posters know about your editing policies. I usually state that I will only edit the posts for minor grammar mistakes and add contextual links to the related articles from my blog.

3. Clearly Describe the Post Submission Process

The easier the process of submitting the post, the better. People prefer doing it in various ways from emailing the post to adding each guest contributor to their WordPress blog authors (I myself use all of the ways for various blogs and purposes).

Here are the two ways that look convenient both from the blogger’s and author’s perspectives:

1. Grant access to your blog WordPress wp-admin and let contributors upload posts.

The method has two great advantages:

It is very handy for managing regular contributors who submit posts monthly or weekly. This way, they can easily log in, upload and format posts to submit for your review.

It is very encouraging for the guest authors to submit more posts. Next time they have a solid post idea, they will come and write the post for the blog they have access to.

If you choose this method, be sure to check my post listing some essential WordPress plugins that make the process of reviewing the guest post and notifying the author of the status easier and faster.

2. Create a form for submitting guest posts

This is an ideal method for those looking for quick one-time submissions. I have such a form for one of my blogs inviting to submit short actionable search tips. You can go with a simple form most of us have for contact page but to ensure high-quality and thorough submissions you’d better create a form that:

Allows to upload or attach images;

Has a separate fields for the post title and the author’s bio;

Has a reliable CAPTCHA (but the one that is possible to pass for a human being);

Supports HTML (or even has an HTML editor);

CformsII is a good plugin to consider for that.

And how do you encourage guest contributions and make the submission process user-friendly?

As a security release, WordPress releases version 2.8.6 which fixes two security problems that can be exploited by untrusted users in your blog who have posting privileges.

The first problem is an XSS vulnerability in Press This discovered by Benjamin Flesch.  The second problem, discovered by Dawid Golunski, is an issue with sanitizing uploaded file names that can be exploited in certain Apache configurations.

Download version 2.8.6 from WordPress.org or you could just upgrade automatically through your blog’s WordPress Dashboard.

We all know that there are millions of WordPress users all over the globe. Wouldn’t it be nice to see where they are located? With WPWorldMap.net, now you can!

WPWorldMap.net is a new website created by Oliver Schloebe of WPSeek.com that lets WordPress users mark their location onto a map for others to see. Each marked location reveals user profiles complete with personal information, a link to their blogs, and also their Twitter accounts.

Powered by Google Maps, the site is relatively easy to use. To map yourself all you need to do is to place a pin marker on your location and then signing up by filling in the required fields on the site’s registration form. It’s so easy that it only takes a few minutes.

Surveying the world map, on the other hand, is as easy as clicking and dragging. You can zoom in and out and even display the world in terrain, map, or satellite form. There’s also a search functionality that let’s you search according to users. You can even add a filter if you just want to display WordPress users, developers, core developers, WordPress related companies, or even fans.

The great thing about this new site is that it gives us a good picture of how many WordPress users there are, not just in the whole world, but also in a particular country or area. This is great tool if you want to find out if there are any WordPress users near your location which is ideal for making new friends and for blog networking!

But of course, the site needs the cooperation of the community as it cannot populate itself. So if you don’t mind revealing your location to others, why not sign up and map yourself now. Oh, and don’t forget to share it to your friends!

Go WordPress Warriors!

Before, there was no way of finding out whether your plugins would still be compatible if you would upgrade your WordPress other than crossing your fingers and trying it out for yourself. If no problems were encountered then, hooray, lucky you. If problems did arise then you have no choice but to revert back to the previous version and hope that the plugin developers would make haste in making their plugin compatible.

This is the main reason why most people are afraid to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress. Thank God WordPress is always on the lookout for better ways of making things easier for its community. Alas, comes the birth of the Plugin Compatibility Beta.

Compatibility Check

If you would drop by the WordPress Plugin Directory you would notice that there is a new section titled “Compatibility” found on the right sidebar of every plugin homepage . This is a new feature that aims to help inform people on whether a version of a plugin is compatible on a particular version of WordPress based on the votes casted by those who have already tested it.

So if you’re not sure whether you should upgrade, just check out the Plugin compatibility consensus of the plugins your using. Though it doesn’t tell us exactly what made the plugin incompatible, at least it gives us a good overview on whether we should continue the upgrade or not.

Powered by the WordPress Community

Of course, this feature would not work without the input of the community as it is mainly powered by votes. If you do happen to experience any problems with your plugins, then please take the time to inform everyone else! All you have to do is to go to the Plugin’s page and log in to vote.

The voting process is simple. Just specify the version of WordPress and the plugin and click on whether it is “broken” or if it “works”. After that, WordPress would automatically log your vote and it will be added to the “consensus” along with the votes of other users.

WordPress warns users, however, that this feature should not be used to report any minor issues with the plugin. You should only vote “Broken” if the plugin is indeed broken to the point that it is unusable or causes problems with your blog. Otherwise, it might give an inaccurate consensus.

Plugin Compatibility is still in Beta so we should expect more improvements to their system soon. I am hoping that Worpdress would soon integrate this inside the WordPress Dashboard for easy access.

More power to WordPress and its community!

What do you think about this new feature? Do you have any other suggestions that could make it better?

Many people thought WordPress 2.8 would be released on June 10th, and only an hour and a half before the end of the day in EDT, my time zone, the button was pressed. WordPress 2.8 “Baker” is out.

2.8 represents a nice fit and finish release for WordPress with improvements to themes, widgets, taxonomies, and overall speed. We also fixed over 790 bugs.

I am looking forward to seeing what plugins and themes break with the new version, as well as what most people think of it. I just started playing around with the 2.8 Release Candidate One today, and so haven’t dived deep into what 2.8 offers, but many say that the improvements, rather than the new features are what makes this release so great.

What’s next? Well, Matt mentions it in the WordPress blog:

We’re already thinking hard about the next versions, 2.9 and 3.0. Keep an eye out for improved media handling, better dependency checking, versioning of templates and themes, and of course the fabled merging of WordPress and MU announced at WordCamp San Francisco two weeks ago.

Try out WordPress 2.8 and let me know what you think of it. I hope that this, unlike most releases, won’t “have” to have a point-one release to fix any glaring security errors.

I can’t believe that Akismet has protected this blog from over a million spam. Started in October 2005, Akismet has been bundled with WordPress almost since its inception.

Without Akismet, and most other anti-spam tools, estimating a minute for every thirty spam comments, it would have taken me almost twelve full days of time to manage myself, or a few hours each and every month.

It is both sad that we have this problem that needs to be taken care of, and exciting that we have solutions to make our lives easier. Where do you sit with your Akismet spam protection?

So today I hit the road to attend the first annual WordCamp Chicago, an event that is sure to be fun and interesting. Many of the people online that I connect with on a fairly regular basis will be there, some have already arrived in the windy city, while many more will be arriving throughout today and early tomorrow.

My wife is coming along with me, not to attend the conference, but because this might be the only “vacation” we get this year, so more than just the conference, we are going to try to make the most of our trip.

I am looking forward to interacting with the people that attend, and hope that everyone is half as excited as me (I could barely sleep last night, it was like waiting for Christmas morning).

This is a great place to list where you’ll be, what you want to do, and what you thought of sessions as we go through the one and a half days.

While there is no plan for video recording of the sessions, Jeff might also be live-streaming some of the sessions over UStream.

Lastly, and most importantly, if you see the guy in the picture with this post, wish him a Happy Birthday. It will be Jeremy Wright‘s 30th birthday!

So, as I hope you can all see, Blogging Pro has received a design refresh. After launching our Blogging Pro theme a long time ago as a free to download theme, it seemed only wise to differentiate ourselves from those using that theme. If you are reading this site via a feed reader, it is time to come over and check out the new design.

I have been having some issues with the new theme that I am working on fixing, but they seem to be ingrained into WordPress, and so might take me a little while to rectify.

Other than one or two small issues, I am very impressed with both the design and implementation of this WordPress theme. Designed by James McDonald, the same person that did my site Branding David, James has done an amazing job with the revamp of Blogging Pro.

I am excited to hear what you think of this new design, and going forward, I hope you enjoy the refresh as well. I will talk about the coding process in an upcoming post.

Sidenote/Update: A huge thanks to Sivel in the WordPress IRC chat for helping me through a strange problem I was having.

If you need to be on the “bleeding edge” of WordPress, today is a good day. WordPress 2.8 Beta 1 has arrived. I’d suggest holding off a while before using it for any live blogs/sites, but it has some shiny features, so checking it out is highly recommended.

Just a few of the new features and changes…

-Add CodePress syntax highlighting to Theme and Plugin editors
-Use “Custom Header” for menu text and revise Default theme to reflect change
-Don’t notify post author of own comments
-Allow the dashboard widgets to be arranged in up to four columns as set via the Screen Options tab
-Autosave post/page when pressing Control/Command+S
-Add toggle all button to the Gallery tab in the uploader
-Support more than one gallery on the same page
-Check for new version when visiting Administration > Tools > Upgrade
-Add per page option to Screen Options for comments, posts, pages, media, categories, and tags
-Fix most popular link category list
-Hide email addresses from low privilege users on Administration > Comments
-Enforce unique email addresses in Add/Edit users

I usually wait for the Release Candidate version before playing with new updates much, but I think I’ll test this one out a bit. I’m hearing good things so far.

Anyone else using 2.8 Beta 1 already, and if so, what do you think? Worth dealing with “Beta 1″?
