As we talked about a few weeks ago, every time a visitor comes to your blog, they have expectations of your site that, if you fail to meet, could cause them to go away and forget about you almost instantly. All of the SEO and content generation efforts mean nothing if you can’t retain a decent number of your visitors.
The problem is that, though most bloggers carry those same expectations when visiting other sites, they simply don’t look at their work with the same level of objectivity and, as a result, often times forget to add key elements to their sites that keep visitors coming back.
But in addition to having the standard things like predictable navigation and a lack of distractions, there’s also certain content that you need to have on your site. These are pages that, while you might initially overlook them, can become incredibly important to new visitors who are trying to learn about you and your site.
So, if you don’t want your visitors to leave confused and disgusted, here’s what you need to make sure your site has.
When it comes to blogging many users quickly master the art creating content, utilizing social networking or even monetizing ones site.
However one item often neglected by new bloggers is pages (or rather the creation of them).
Unlike blog posts which areÂ frequentlyÂ updated and more “newsy,” pages are for the most part edited infrequently and usually receive far more attention from readers than the authors themselves.

The soon to be released WordPress 3.0 comes with a new menu management, but your theme has to have this capability built in. But what if you’d rather not edit your theme files or simply don’t want to wait for WordPress 3.0? Luckily there are a few plugins out there that will enable you to have a very flexible menu – without the fancy interface though. These are plugins I have used extensively on many sites which required a custom menu.
Exclude Pages is a plugin that does exactly what the title suggest. It allows you to specify per page whether or not a page needs to be in the menu or not. This plugin adds a checkbox, ‘include this page in menus’ to your page edit screen. All you need to do is uncheck this to exclude pages from the page navigation so that users won’t see on your site. As simple as that. Do keep in mind that pages which are children of excluded pages also do not show up in menu listings. Read More
Happy Monday, folks! Disappointing news for those of us waiting for the official Movable Type 5 release: It’s been postponed till January 5. In the announcement, Six Apart only says that there are issues to resolve so they’re waiting till after the holidays to release. I believe this is the third official release date we’ve had, let’s hope it’s the last one.
Byrne Reese has announced a new version of the Media Manager plugin. The previous version was broken by a change to Amazon’s API. Rather than patch the problem, Byrne did a major rewrite of the software to take advantage of an existing Amazon API library. As a result, folks upgrading from a previous version will likely need to update their templates. Read More
