Over the course of this column, I’ve talked a great deal about the various pitfalls bloggers may encounter over the course of running their sites. This has included everything from hosting disasters to libel lawsuits and more. Blogging can be a scary place and I’ve done more than almost anyone to point out the reasons to be afraid and worried.
However, Franklin D. Roosevelt perhaps said it best when, during his first inaugural address in 1932, he told a suffering nation, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. He was right.
Fear is a paralyzing force. It causes us to freeze or seek safety, it pushes us to avoid risks, shirk the spotlight and to take the much safer path. For a blogger, this can be a death blow. Blogging can be a risky activity but fear of those risks can often be greater than the risk itself. Fear prevents you from blogging, it prevents you from creating your best content and, most importantly, it prevents you from truly growing your site.
Learning to address and deal with fear, whether fear of success, fear of failure or something else entirely, is crucial for every blogger. Unfortunately though, this is one of those pitfalls that isn’t easily avoided, especially if you have a very fear-prone personality.
Reviews are one of the best types of post for a blog. If done well, they are very search-friendly, extremely useful to your readers and can be great conversation starters for building comments.
However, a review done poorly can be a pretty big mess. Not only can it create a great deal of needless controversy and headache, but it can actually discredit your site and, in extreme cases, create legal troubles.
Though angry and misanthropic reviews are all the rage in many circles, especially with older video games and movies, they are primarily comedy shows that aren’t intended to give a true review of the content. Most people, in those cases, know the subject material to be bad, it’s just a matter of how much so.
Writing a review for the purpose of informing and drawing conclusions can, at times, be a delicate act but pulling it off is one that your readers will appreciate. Balanced, thorough and honest reviews are still surprisingly rare on the Web and when people are making purchasing decisions, they seek those out.

To a blogger, Internet access is much like electricity or water, it is an essential for business and, without it, a home becomes almost unlivable in a hurry.
Unfortunately, even though Internet access is becoming more and more reliable, it is a virtual guarantee that it will go down at some point and not just for a little while. Where we can generally count on our power being restored pretty quickly or getting our water turned on in short order after an outrage, our phone and cable companies may not be able to get our Web access back on for a day or more at a time.
This problem was highlighted for me during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. My neighborhood in New Orleans was spared the worst of the storm and I returned home, after three weeks away, to find my home safe and already had power, water and gas restored. Internet, however, would not be restored for another two weeks.
So how do we have to accept, at least for now, that Internet access just isn’t as reliable as we would like it to be and that can impact our blogging, especially since it’s an activity that, at some point, requires Internet access to take place.

My good friend Patrick O’Keefe recently sat down for an hour-long interview with Rise to the Top that discussed, among other things, how to build and promote a successful site or community.
One of the points he made was that you don’t have to create the next Facebook or the next Google in order to have a successful site, but instead do something well within your personal niche that enables you to grow.
Because, while the drive to be number one certainly isn’t a bad thing by itself, it often causes bloggers to make two very critical mistakes. The first is to compare their site’s value to others and the second is to blindly imitate those who they see as more successful.
Either mistake can easily kill off an otherwise great blog by creating unneeded discouragement, but, more importantly, the mindset that you have to be number one in every respect can lead you to ruin what makes your blog unique and great. Read More
Everyone knows what being a blogger entails but fewer people know what creating a successful blog involves. Far too many bloggers have fallen for the false mantra of “If you write it, they will come” only to watch their traffic, readership and even profits lag behind their efforts.
There is much more to writing a blog than just simply putting out new blog entries. Even ignoring promotion, communication and other activities all bloggers do, there is a simple truth that, for the most part, a great blog can not be simply a great blog.
Nearly all great blogs are something else too and it is important to be thinking about that both as you work to develop the idea for your site and as you grow it. Rather than focusing merely on the daily grind, you need to make sure that your readers have other reasons to both first find your site and keep coming back.
After all, blogs are a dime a dozen on the Web, without something more, your site may not be worthless, but it can sure feel that way.
