If you’re taking the time to start or maintain a blog, you probably want it to be good. You certainly don’t want to invest your time, energy and effort into creating something that’s mediocre or outright bad.
But blogging isn’t easy, in fact, it is incredibly difficult, requiring seemingly endless amounts of creativity, dedication and patience. This says nothing about the disparate areas of knowledge you have to have including design, writing and promotion just to find and keep an audience.
But quick fixes are very appealing. Everyone wants to know what one thing they can do or series of steps that they can follow to make their blog a big success. However, if it were so easy, every blog would be a success and it there wouldn’t be millions of abandoned sites littered all over the Web.
In short, while there are some great, easy tips that can help, none of them will make you a great blogger on their own.
However, there is a series of steps you can follow to become a better blogger. Unfortunately, none of the steps are easy and no blogger does all of them perfectly.
But, if you want to know the truth, here are the steps you need to follow to build a good blog and become a great blogger. Just don’t assume any of them can be done in a weekend, let alone an hour. Read More

With 57% of adults in the UK having joined a social network, online companies have begun to capitalise on this, realising the importance of social media as a marketing tool. As more and more firms set up their company pages, it is not enough to simply have a social media presence; instead, these profiles must be maintained and monitored on a regular basis. This in itself has become a subject of much discussion, with many highlighting the difficulties of measuring the success of this approach. I was on my first assignment and task as a writer for a law firm. Because of the trend in social media lately, I decided to check how the law firms utilize and use it for their online promotional campaigns.
Recently, the demand for social media marketing has greatly increased for several reasons. One of these is the relatively low cost of maintaining marketing campaigns in social media sites. Plus there are a lot of channels to choose from.
Law firms now extensively use social media in their link building and SEO campaigns. No wonder why because social media is getting more attention. Read More

High school students will soon need online courses to remain competitive in the workplace, which may present unique challenges for educators. These courses can help prepare students to complete virtual courses in college and beyond. Building a brand around your website isn’t a simple process, not only do you have to create amazing content that readers want to engage with, you have to work off-site to spread the word about that content in a manner that peaks the interest of readers.
Unfortunately many new bloggers and even some seasoned writers fail to properly use social media properly, destroying the work they put into their posts before they have a chance to go viral.
In this section we’ll examine some of the ways you can destroy your blog by become over zealous about the use of social media.
1. Destroying Your Facebook Engagement Score
I’ve written about Facebook engagement numbers in the past. Many bloggers love to throw up 5, 10 or even more posts on their Facebook wall each day without realizing that your posts display to a decreasing number of Facebook page fans if your past posts show no or very little interaction. For example if you have 1000 fans but only one person likes a post, shares it or comments on it your engagement for that post is just .1% which means Facebook will find your posts to be lacking in content readers want and will therefore only show your next Facebook post to a few of your 1000 fans (typically better then 1.5% engagement is best). To correct this problem you should create engagement statements or questions around only your best posts while pushing your readers to ask questions, leave statements and share those posts. As your engagement score increases the traffic you drive to your website will increase with it. Read More

Social media has truly grabbed the attention of anyone hoping to drive traffic to a website in 2011. Everyone knows that social media is a great way to generate publicity for a website, but it is time consuming. Creating engaging content, commenting on articles across the web, tweeting, stumbling, connecting, following, friending, liking, even using VoIP phone systems for those who want to chat—it’s all a lot of work. The question then is this: How can you tell whether or not these efforts are actually making a difference? Looking at the number of followers on Twitter or number of “likes†on Facebook simply won’t do the trick. The quality of these interactions is simply too difficult to gauge. After all, how many times do you really visit the website you’re following on Twitter? How many times have you clicked “like†and then completely forgotten you did that in the first place?

What does a typical day in your life look like, technology-wise? Perhaps you find yourself waking up each morning feeling as if you simply must check your Facebook and email. And then maybe you decide to send a wake-up message into the Twitterverse…but not before looking at your Myspace account (just in case). After which you spend various moments throughout the day consulting your chosen Smartphone in order to check these social networks, again and again.
Well, you’re not alone. It comes as a surprise to no one that online social networks have taken over many aspects of our day-to-day lives. A reported one-sixth of the planet is on Facebook, Twitter currently has about 175 million users – and most of us can count ourselves among these numbers. People are absolutely addicted to social networking, no doubt about it. So, the question is: are these online social networks healthy or harmful to our overall well-being and happiness? Read More

The dirtiest words in my vocabulary when placed in a certain order are as follows: Search Engine Optimization. It’s not that I find SEO to be dirty in principle, but rather the fact that jumping to the top of search pages in a day and age where there are literally millions of blogs isn’t as simple as it use to be. For that reason alone I attempt to write most of my content these days with an emphasis on creating social media appeal.
To accomplish my goal there are several important aspects of my content that I try to focus on.
1. Ask Questions At The End Of  Posts
This might seem like a no brainer but a lot of people fail to ask questions when finishing a post. As a blogger I always remind myself that my thoughts are mine alone and they may not reflect the views of my readership. By asking a question I form a relationship with each reader which means they are more likely to share their thoughts via Twitter, Facebook and other social media sights in order to discover what their friends think about the same topic.
