Jones & Bartlett Learning (JBL), a world-leading learning solutions provider for college-level educational and reference textbooks and media, has an opening for a Freelance Textbook Editor/Writer in its Public Safety Group.
We are seeking editors/writers with textbook publishing experience, ideally in hands-on or technical subject matter, to write, edit, and revise manuscripts in the areas of Emergency Medical Services, Electrical Training, Firefighting, Automotive Training. There is the potential to become a permanent remote employee.
In addition to the ability to work with and understand hands-on, technical subject matter, the candidate should be familiar with the process of manuscript acquisition, working with textbook authors/subject matter experts, the general production processes for textbook/media publishing, as well as overall publishing business practices, methodologies, and procedures.
Based on guidance from the Managing Editor, Acquisition Editors, or Publisher, and under minimal supervision, develop and rewrite Public Safety manuscript(s) initially drafted by subject matter experts in the areas of Emergency Medical Services, Electrical Training, Firefighting, and Automotive Training to create professional, high-quality, market-appropriate, production-ready manuscripts.
Types of Responsibilities:
Evaluate the project needs; analyze competing texts; and analyze curriculum documents.
Assess the originality of content.
As needed for Electrical publications, revise manuscripts to be presented in a technical, engineering-style voice.
Create/edit learning objectives and head structure for each chapter based on a curriculum.
Developmentally edit, organize, and rewrite manuscript written by subject matter experts and contributors, to make it market-appropriate and professional.
Identify missing material that must be written by subject matter experts. Create author instruction, specifying where content should go, how long it should be, and what points it should cover.
Pose content queries for subject matter experts/authors.
Write content, features, and end-of-chapter material as needed based on chapter content.
Create reviewer questionnaires to be used in sending manuscript to peer review.
Develop art program concepts (photos, illustrations, and tables) and write captions. Create an element log of the art program in an Excel template provided by JBL.
4-year college degree or equivalent. Course work in areas related to publishing and writing helpful.
Previous experience: 2 to 4 years experience in the publishing process, particularly as applies to the editorial processes of educational/textbook publishing, as a Development Editor, Associate Editor, Technical Writer, or other related position.
Critical attributes include enthusiasm, motivation, task and detail orientation, ability to manage multiple activities/projects, high level of organization, and the ability to influence others.
Complete computer literacy, familiarity with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc), and email.
Excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills required.
