Description

Wall St. Cheat Sheet is looking for freelance writers to write features on a range of subjects, from business and finance to politics, health, autos, entertainment, travel, and more. With a monthly audience of over 14 million unique readers, Wall St. Cheat Sheet has distinguished itself as a forum for thoughtful, objective coverage of U.S. industry and government, covering subjects ranging from new legislation arising from the financial crisis (e.g., TARP) to new tech products about to come to market (e.g., the new iPhone). Now, we’re looking for freelancers to join the team as we broaden our coverage to new verticals.

Freelance writers will have the opportunity to write on a variety of subjects, and pursue stories that match their particular interests. The successful freelance candidate will have a background in writing, and would ideally bring a strong, unique voice to his/her articles, as well as a sharp wit and the ability to recognize interesting news elements. Writers should bring with them significant knowledge of the subject areas they are hoping to cover. Freelance writers will often be called upon to suggest their own story ideas or angles through research, but should leave all personal prejudices at the door in the interest of remaining objective and maintaining Wall St. Cheat Sheet’s reputation for fair, honest coverage of the news.

Strong reading comprehension is essential, as is the ability to learn quickly and adapt to the varying and ever-changing demands of the job. Having your own style is crucial, but so is the ability to conform to editorial standards. Freelance work is often self-directed, but will be expected to adhere to certain guidelines that govern all Wall St. Cheat Sheet content, including minimum word counts, house style, and article structure.

The ideal job candidate will have a strong background in writing, whether through his/her studies or in a professional capacity. He/she should have a strong grasp of proper grammar and punctuation (e.g., Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style), and knowledge of AP style is a plus. All freelancers will have the opportunity to be considered for full-time feature writing positions as they open up.

Compensation will be on a per article basis.

Please apply ONLY if you meet the following requirements:

4-year college degree or equivalent work experience
Excellent writing and copywriting skills
The ability to learn and adapt quickly
A strong work ethic and pride in personal reliability
A passion for writing
Close attention to detail and the ability to multitask
The ability to take direction and respond to constructive criticism
A specific understanding of journalistic writing and a commitment to its tenets
A working knowledge of search-engine optimization is preferred, but not required
Computer proficiency and the ability to learn new systems quickly (e.g. WordPress)

To apply, please send your resume, cover letter, and a writing sample as PDFs with the subject heading ‘Freelance Writer - WSCS Jobs.’
