Description
Our client, a full-service advertising agency in the Chicago loop, is in search of a freelance web editor/proofreader. We’re looking for folks with at least two years of experience copy editing long and short copy on-screen for an agency or large internal marketing/advertising department. Must have experience editing HTML and using content management systems.
It’s not enough to know the difference between its and it’s. Our client needs somebody who’s buttoned up enough to catch out-of-whack leading, mis-sized logos, inconsistent bullet points, widows, dangling participles and misused homonyms, yet loosy-goosey enough to ignore errors “when the client wants it that way,” apply different styles different brands, and work long hours at the drop of a hat. Strong people skills and patience for working with perfectionists and artists while under deadline a must.
Location: On-site in downtown Chicago
Hours: On call
Pay Rate: $17 – 22/hr
Job Type: Freelance (W2)
Responsibilities:
• Proofread websites, online banner ads, minigames, apps, coupons, presentations and marketing materials for spelling, grammar, style, consistency and layout
• Make changes online, or note on pdfs
• Point out inconsistencies and recommend improvements
• Learn and apply brand style guides (most are a hybrid of AP Stylebook and the Chicago Manual of Style)
• Contribute to editorial style guides
Qualifications:
• 2+ years of experience long and short copy on-screen for an agency or large internal marketing/advertising department
• Working knowledge of HTML
• Proficiency in using at least one major content management system MS Office (Word, Excel and Powerpoint), Adobe Acrobat Professional for Mac. FileMaker knowledge is a plus
• Knowledge of standard proofreaders’ marks
• Experience using Microsoft review functions and marking up Acrobat documents on screen
• Excellent English skills, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage
• A sharp eye for comparing numbers and/or source material
• Ability to handle multiple projects with changing priorities in a deadline driven environment
• A flexible schedule with the ability to work late or weekends as needed
• Promptness and dependability
• Solid people skills, and the ability to work independently
• Working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style and the AP Stylebook, along with experience creating, implementing and following brand-specific style guides
• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English or another relevant field
