Starting a Successful Blog within 4 Weeks: Is it Possible?
With over 150 million blogs running wild on the Blogosphere, many aspiring content producers are bound to fail for one reason or another.
Unfortunately, many of us dream big but soon discover the harsh realities of making money online through blogging. Content research, promotion, list building, and social media are but a few of the many “chores” bloggers must face to keep the business running.
Thankfully, you don’t have to be part of a sad statistic. This blog post is dedicated to helping you launch a successful blog through some conventional, but often misunderstood practices in the shortest amount of time possible.
I have divided this topic into a two-part series, the latter which reveals even more actionable steps to ensure that you go from zero to hero. Stay tuned.
First off: Narrow Your Focus
I won’t spend much time on this point, as most bloggers should already know that choosing a “niche” and narrow subject is much better than going too broad.
This allows for a smaller, but highly converting audience that is always hungry for the things you have to offer. Need I say more?
How much you decide to drill down your topic is entirely up to you, as this can be a tad subjective depending on the blogger and subject in question, as well as the overall execution and strategy.
Set Everything Up Immediately
What this means: Get an email subscription service and give your readers a valuable incentive for signing up.
This step is painfully obvious to many bloggers, but I still see quite a few marketers with no list-building desire to speak of. This is often because they haven’t found that “perfect” incentive, causing them to gradually put it off indefinitely.
Finally, while you shouldn’t aim for perfection right away (most blogs will never be fully finished, anyway) you should at least make it presentable for the masses.
Buy a premium theme, choose a medium-sized font over small ones, and keep your overall website uncluttered.
Remain Actionable. Every Time.
What this means: As someone who works with many freelance writers and bloggers, I sometimes notice their blog titles are confusing or vague.
If you can, incorporate the main benefit into your titles or place them within the very first article sentence.
Brian Dean, for example, uses basic copywriting skills to ensure users click on his headlines without fail. Use irrefutable data and/or promising facts from the get-go, such as “Learn the Method that Increased My Traffic By 118%.”
Cut to the chase by explaining exactly what benefit the reader will get, perhaps the reasons why he needs said benefit, and then jump right in.
Not every post needs to come from personal experience. For example, do the occasional case study about someone else’s success, breaking down how that person achieved it and how your readers can do the same.
I’ll be honest: Sometimes I feel lazy. And so does every blogger under the sun.
Thankfully, you can still launch a successful blog and publish incredibly useful content even on your worst day.
Leverage short post ideas by publishing the following on occasion:
An infographic (with a brief, unique overview)
Embed a video (for example, a TED Talk presentation based on your niche)
A post roundup (for example, the best around the web within your niche)
A “spotlight” post (introduce a prominent blogger to your audience, then link to his website)
Not only can you save time posting the above content formats, but this is an incredible way to connect with other bloggers in your niche.
Now you have a great reason to say, “Hey, Bob, I figured you should know I posted your YouTube video on my blog, and my readers love it.” This opens the door to so much more after initial contact – you and I know this.
Note: While the above post formats will help you on occasion, your success largely depends on in-depth content consisting of detailed and actionable information. Use the above on the occasional rainy day, but do not make a habit of leaning on this too much.
Other efficiency tactics:
Make High-Quality Friends (Don’t Be Afraid)
This is perhaps the most important part of this article, as it helps bring a lot of traffic, recognition, and authority to your blog.
The average blogger makes a decent attempt at befriending influencers and lesser-known people. We occasionally comment on their latest posts and may even subscribe to their mailing list.
Sadly, our attention to detail gradually fades until we stop communicating with the influencer altogether. More often than not, however, we feel intimidated and simply don’t want to ask them about working together or contributing a guest post on their blog.
Remember, the worst that can happen is that someone says “No” and declines. You still have about a million other bloggers to network with, all while improving your game and communication skills.
To keep up with my favorite bloggers and gradually come to know them, I rely on RSS readers and make them easily accessible.
I highly encourage you to do the following (really, it’s crucial).
Go to igHome.com and create a free account. This website allows you to customize a page with all the RSS feeds you can possibly handle. You may also use other RSS services by typing “iGoogle alternatives” into a search engine near you.
Go to your favorite blogs and grab their RSS feeds. Their feed address is typically “Mywebsite.com/feed.” Otherwise, look for the orange icon at the top or at the bottom of the blog.
Input said RSS feeds into igHome or your preferred RSS reader/service.
Set igHome as your homepage or startup page. This will be the very first thing you see whenever you open up your browser. All the latest posts will be beautifully listed here, sorted by blog name.
Leave an insightful (and incredibly useful) comment on every blog post that genuinely interests you…
But don’t stop there: Send the blogger in question a personal email if you genuinely believe he has helped you in some way. Or simply thank him for being so selfless.
All in all, there are about one thousand ways to form professional relationships.
