Although blogging never started as a way to earn backlinks, it has quickly become one of the most popular ways to help improve a website’s ranking on a Google SERP. The idea of guest posting in exchange for backlinks has suddenly given bloggers more choices and a bigger chance to really make a living from blogging. For this reason, more and more bloggers are being recruited to work for companies as full-time writers as a part of the SEO department. The biggest problem: Not all bloggers understand SEO.

There are of course many bloggers who would prefer to blog for fun, but for those who want to make it a profession, SEO is an absolute necessity. This often scares bloggers because SEO isn’t something taught in schools and it isn’t something that traditional writers have ever had to consider. Fortunately, understanding SEO as a writer does not have to be difficult, and for many it can actually be fun.

From Blogger to SEO Blogger—How To Make the Transition

In most cases, bloggers will not have to change much about their writing or routine; however it can be a big adjustment if you’re not prepared. Below are a few tips and tricks to help smooth the transition:

1. Audience and Tone – When you’re writing to help a company improve in the Google ranks, audience is going to be key. Blogging on your own gives you the freedom to write about whatever you want, whether it be controversial or have a sarcastic tone. However, blogging for a company is very different. You must always worry about your image because you are representing an entire company. This may seem obvious, but this is a big change for some bloggers.

2. Links – This is where the SEO expertise really comes in handy. It is important for a blogger to understand that there should be a link back to the company either within the copy of the text or in an author bio. In general, a company will tell the blogger where the links should point and what the anchor text should be. For the blogger, it is just a matter of fitting in the links naturally.

3. Keywords – Utilizing keywords should come naturally and not be something that bloggers have to worry too much about when writing. However, it is important to understand that a keyword should be one word that describes your article, and should then be a part of the title, headings, and tags. This may change the title that the blogger originally wanted, but keywords are important for SEO.

4. Documentation – With guest blogging and SEO comes documentation, companies usually want to know what backlinks they are getting in return for the writing. You will then have to document when an article goes live and what links were used. Some companies even go as far as having you record social sharing numbers. For SEO experts, it’s all about the numbers and analyzing these numbers, so bloggers need to be prepared.

For many, it isn’t a question of whether or not they can do, but rather do they want to. Blogging means something different for everyone, and making the choice to become a professional blogger could hinder some of the aspects of personal blogging. However, understanding SEO should never be something that stops a blogger from making it his/her career.
