WordPress Theme: Wheatgrass

Michael Martine has created a theme called Wheatgrass which is a green version of his Sapphire which he also put back up. Wheatgrass is a 2 column theme that looks very professional and distinct.

Once in a while, I create WordPress themes and will post them here for free download. If you like my work and want a custom theme (or if you have problems with a theme), contact me at michaelmartine {at} gmail {dot com}.

Search Engine Optimization

S.E.O. is on the mind of many bloggers these days. What can I do better to make it so my entries rank higher on Google, and are filled with the information that people are looking for? Usually it is just changing a few things, and voila, you have a blog that is a little better in the Search Engine Optimization department.

Well, for those of you looking for a great resource, have you tried the WordPress Codex? A very valuable resource for just about any WordPress related topic, the Codex is Wiki based, meaning anyone can contribute to the information listed, and one of the pages it contains is on S.E.O.

WordPress comes with several built in search optimization tools, including the ability to use .htaccess to create apparently static URLs called permalinks, blogrolling, and pinging. There are also a number of third party plugins and hacks which can be used for search engine optimization (SEO).

WordPress Theme: Springer

Springer is a 3-column design inspired by the Spring style for Pivot by Andrea Pitschmann. It is very grey and orange with a very blocky and simple look.

Just wanted to announce a new Three-Column theme that I adapted for WordPress… I like the look of three columns, and didn’t see a lot of well-developed ones for WordPress.

The theme is Springer, and you can see it in action on my blog,

I think it’s pretty nifty, of course, so I just wanted to mention it and share the design back to the community.

So check it out at and download it.

WordPress Plugin: Google Analyticator

cavemonkey50 has created a little plugin for WordPress that adds Google Analyticator’s JavaScript code to your WordPress blog.

Google Analyticator adds the necessary JavaScript code to enable Google Analytics logging. This eliminates the need to edit your template code to begin logging, which is nice if your not using your own theme or just want to keep your template file uncluttered.

WordPress Theme: Impact

Impact is a two column theme with the sidebar on the right hand side. It is a very simple looking theme, with some blue’s to accent certain things. The emphasis is taken away from the category and date of the content and thus is placed on the content itself.

WordPress Plugin: Custom Smilies 1.1

I have to admit, I don’t use “smilies” in my blogging very much. I think it takes away from the look of the blog and distracts from the post, but if you are one of the people that like doing that…feel free with this new plugin that will make it so you are not limited to the small group that WordPress bundles.

Custom Smileys is a WordPress plugin that allow you to set up your own collection of smileys and use it in your posts/ comments. You’re able to change the display settings, the ’shortcuts’ to call the smileys and almost everything.

It’s easy-to-use and easy-to-install. Working perfectly with WordPress 1.5.

WordPress Plugin: Brians Latest Comments 1.5.5

A great plugin used by many people to track the latest comments we have received on our blogs, and it has been updated to fix some issues and add some new features.

This release should fix the Time Since bug that has been reported numerous times.

I also added a new feature:
Comment temperature
(thanks to Michael for that term).
The comments now fade between two colors depending on their age. It gives an impression of the relative ages of the messages.
This makes it easier to see if it’s a single new comment on an old post that has floated the comment to the top or if there’s general activity.

You can set the colors to fade between and the max number of days in which to fade from newest to oldest.
The default settings fade from a dark grey (newest) to a light grey (oldest) in 10 days.

Grab the zip file of it here.

WordPress Theme: Ocean

A two column, blue and orange theme has been released over at Designer Diary. It is called Ocean, and looks pretty nice in my opinion, especially the content area with some simple changes from other designs, this design really stands out.

A new theme for WordPress 1.5.2, very vibrant, very fresh, and very valid!

WordPress Theme: BloxPress Demo Live

Late last month I brought up the development of a new theme system called BloxPress, and all you could see was a “tech demo” in flash, well, it has been released as a full useable demo now, so feel free to play with it, and let me, or them know what you think.
