CARRYING ON THE CROSS! Why was I feeling sick? I hardly felt sick, and my mother made sure we took healthy supplements every day to keep our bodies healthier. Teacher Teresa noticed my dull mood and approached me. “Myke, are you all right”? She asked. “I\'m fine, ma\'am, I\'m just suddenly feeling feverish, but once I get home, my mother will give me medication, and by tomorrow, I will be better,” I said to her, forcing my weak face to smile. A few moments later, my temperature became so high that someone close to me could feel the hotness of my skin. My body got weakened, and my spirit was disturbed. My teacher asked me to go home rather than stay sick in the school environment. My friend, Uchenna, helped me arrange my school bag and escorted me to the school gate. On getting to the route to my compound, I heard cries and screams of people coming out from my destination. I was taken aback, but I decided to know what it was all about. I walked closer, and I saw my Aunt on the floor crying; my uncles were sitting, shaking their heads in disbelief. Immediately they saw me, my aunt rushed and held me crying. Everybody was looking at me out of pity. “Is everything okay”? “Where\'s my mother”? “What\'s happening here”? I had a lot of questions to ask at once, but nobody replied. I sat on the floor in confusion until my uncle approached me to tell me that my mother was hit by a vehicle on her way back from the market; before they got her to the hospital, she had already given up the ghost. I flashed back to my health challenge earlier in school and I understood I felt sick because of what was happening. Can I bear this? It\'s been 2 years since we lost our father, and our mother has been the breadwinner of the family. I\'m the oldest among my siblings.
